How to Craft Your Hurricane Plan
Hurricanes can be tricky, the nice thing is they move slow so we have time to prepare and make a plan. The downside (besides the actual hurricane) is that it gives everyone more time to stress and worry about the unknown. One of the best ways to combat anxiety and stress is to have a plan. Here are a few tips to help you craft your hurricane plan.
1. Evacuation
If you are one who knows you do not want to brave the storm, secure your home and evacuate as soon as possible. Look at the projections and choose a state that is not in the path. Mobile, trailer, manufactured homes, and recreational vehicles (RVs) cannot provide safe shelter from tropical-storm or hurricane-force winds. If your county recommends or requires you to evacuate it's for a good reason, to keep you safe.
2. Planning on staying in your home
Even if you are planning on staying in your home, know where the closest shelters are just incase you need to evacuate last minute. Also plan ahead and know which ones are pet friendly. Next secure your home, put up your hurricane shutters, and bring all loose items inside that could blow away or become projectiles. Make your emergency hurricane kit (see Check List).
3. Know where you can go and how to get there for Plan B
Know your evacuation routes and which roads to take to get there. If your plan B is to stay at a hotel make sure to book in advance. Rooms along major highways tend to sell out. If you have friends or family in a safe zone ask if they would mind if you stay for a few days.
4. Know where your family is and what their plans are
If you have family in the area make sure they know your plan and vice versa. If things get bad you know what steps they will be taking and where to find them. If you have room you can always stay together for peace of mind!
